Four-Run Inning Lifts Team Independence Over Team Freedom To All-Star Game Victory

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.- In the 2016 SCCBL All-Star Game Team Independence had a late rally in the sixth inning to win the ballgame 8-6 over Team Freedom. The star-studded lineups featured the best of the best in the SCCBL.

To start off the All-Star festivities Joe DeRoche-Duffin won the 2016 SCCBL Home Run Derby. DeRoche-Duffin out-lasted some of the most dominant bats of the SCCBL. The home run derby list was power-packed with one representative from each of the five SCCBL teams.

The contestants were: Kaleb Foster, who represtened the Palm Springs POWER, Joe DeRoche-Duffin who represented the San Diego Force, Justin Gomez, the representative from the Inland Valley Buccaneers, Devon Deraad from the Arroyo Seco Sentinels, and last but not least Patrick Vizcaino from the So Cal Bombers.

The finale came down to Palm Springs POWER: Kaleb Foster, and San Diego Force’s Joe DeRoche-Duffin. In the final round Kaleb Foster went first and put three home runs up on the board. That was not enough though as Joe DeRoche-Duffin would win the 2016 Home Run Derby sending four moonshots to claim the title. DeRoche-Duffin also won 2015 Northwoods League Home Run Derby.

It was a close and hard-fought battle throughout the All-Star game as Team Independence capitalized on the poor pitching performance of Team Freedom. There were key offensive performances from the Inland Valley Buccaneers Justin Gomez as he delivered an RBI single in the first for Team Freedom’s first run. The majority of the runs would not come until the sixth inning as Team Independence would put four runs on the board. Team Independence would add three more runs in the seventh and another run in the eighth to put them on top 8-5. Team Freedom tried to rally back but was shut down in the eighth and ninth innings.

Some notable performances from Team Independence include: Nolan Hoff who delivered a two-run single in the seventh. Brandon Baeckel also came through to deliver an RBI single for Team Independence. Last but certainly not least Patrick Vizcaino was 1-2 with a run scored while flashing the leather from third base.

Notable performances from Team Freedom include: Brock Hale who went 2-3, Gabe Chavez who was 0-1 with an RBI sac-fly. Chavez also made team Independence pay after he relied on his speed and came all the way around to score after team Independence let him reach on an error.

Every team has the Sunday off in preparation for playoffs. The Palm Springs POWER are the number one seed, the San Diego Force will be the number two seed, the So Cal Bombers have claimed the three seed, and last but not least the Arroyo Seco Sentiels will be the number four seed. Playoff games start on Monday where the Palm Springs POWER will be in action on the road to take on number four seed Arroyo Seco Sentinels. While the San Diego Force will be hosting the So Cal Bombers for game one of their three-game series.
